Tandem Made is working hard on a few new and exciting projects for the show.  Without giving too much away... here's a sneak peak at our process mock-ups for testing size, ergonomics and movement.   Wall mounted moveable light and a rocking chair.  Fun time at the studio.  We look forward to sharing the final pieces with you soon!

We're just 1 month away now!

Just a couple of process shots of but one of the pieces I will be making for the show. A bit of a learning curve for me as it features tapered sliding dovetails at all of the joint intersections to accommodate the nature of wood. All went well as you can see, due to those sliding dovetails the entire carcass holds itself together without the aid of glues or fasteners, and will be able to expand and contract with seasonal moisture changes (unlike the piece of junk you bought at that big box store that disintegrated cause your dog peed on it [true personal experience]).

I do these types of things in my furniture construction not only for the sport of it but because it serves a time tested purpose in furniture construction. It is my belief that contemporary design doesn't have to mean compromising craft. The beauty of modern tools however is that it need not be a slow, painstaking process of hand working everything as it once was. 

DOWN BY THE RIVER: DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE MINNEAPOLIS WAREHOUSE DISTRICT

My designs for the show are inspired by industrial architectural elements found in Minneapolis Warehouse District near the Mississippi River like timber frame posts, metal fire doors on top rolling tracks, and metal trestle bridges.  I am trying to incorporate these industrial elements and a raw material aesthetic to a series of furniture including side tables, lighting and seating.  Below is an idea board featuring some of these inspirational elements and some metal finishes I am considering.

Above is a pulley that I am using to build a light fixture. 
I just need to find the perfect counter weight.

Welcome to Guerilla by Design

What would happen if 15 furniture designers invaded your home and replaced all your belongings with furniture designed specifically for your space?

Guerilla By Design is an ambush style furniture exhibition trying to answer that question. An urban residential space will be re-imagined and re-furnished with furniture from Minneapolis designers.

The Guerilla Designers’ goal is to highlight the rich design culture present in Minneapolis/St. Paul, and prove great design doesn’t just happen in London, New York, and Milan. Guerilla Designers’ mission: Take furniture design out of the gallery and put it into the context of a living space making it less intimidating, and accessible to everyone.
